ETHNOGRAPHY IN THE CITY: CHALLENGES OF PROXIMITY IN CONTEXTS OF VIOLENCE

Abstract

In this work I will seek to reflect on the contributions and challenges of ethnography to the theme of urban violence. I will take as a starting point an ethnographic experience that deals with the representation of violence in two popular neighborhoods in the city of Campina Grande - PB. In the course of the text, I will describe the difficulties and dilemmas I faced in the field and how these were fundamental for the understanding of the groups studied. I will also present the contributions of an ethnographic vision based on proximity as a counterpoint to homogenizing visions of urban violence.
