Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disease that affects approximately 451 million adults worldwide, with an estimate of reaching 693 million people by 2045. There are four subtypes of DM, but in clinical practice it is divided into type 1, which has a characteristic genetic and type 2 which is multifactorial. Both generate a chronic inflammatory state in the patient's body, which without proper treatment and glycemic control generates fatal complications for the individual. The objective of this study is to analyze the age and gender profile of patients hospitalized in the state of Rio de Janeiro in the last five years, using the Hospital Information System (SIH) in the Informatics Department of the Unified Health System as a database. Table 1 showed that within the 36,583 hospitalizations that occurred in this period, most were concentrated in the age group from 60 to 69 years, in table 2 it was possible to see that this number belongs mostly to males and over the years this number remained constant. Such findings can be justified due, respectively, to the increase in life expectancy, the greater search for health services by women and the difficulty in accessing primary care.
