The elderly population has been growing continuously, representing about 10% of Brazilians and the transition of this demographic process consequently brings a high rate of diseases that are more prevalent in this age group. One of these conditions is sepsis, which can be defined as an organic dysfunction caused by an infection that carries a high risk of life. The present study aimed to carry out an epidemiological analysis of hospitalizations for sepsis in elderly patients in the Southeast in the last 5 years. It is an observational, cross-sectional and retrospective study through a survey of data from the Department of Information and Informatics of the SUS (DATASUS). The data obtained were the number of hospitalizations for sepsis in the Southeast, during the period from January 2017 to December 2021, in the population over 60 years of age, the number of deaths, mortality rate, mean length of hospital stay and mean value of each hospitalization. The results found were a total of 197,295 hospitalizations, of which 118,881 died, presenting an average mortality rate of 60.26%. The average hospital stay was 11.3 days with a cost of R$3,507.67 for each hospitalization. The other studies corroborated the data found, presenting a high incidence, mortality and expenses for the health systems. It is important to prioritize the installation of diagnostic protocols so that it can be early and enable the installation of immediate treatment for a better outcome of hospitalization.
