Introduction: third molars have been the subject of several questions and myths regarding their development and particularities since they are also called wisdom teeth. Objective: to analyze the influence of third molars on dental crowding, as well as to determine its main causes and clinical consequences. Methodology: this is a quantitative bibliographic research, with a descriptive and exploratory nature, in the electronic databases: LILACS, MEDLINE and SCIELO. Results and discussion: the bibliographic analysis corresponded to 7 articles eligible for the development of this study according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. There is a paucity of scientific evidence showing that lower third molars are the only or even the most important etiological factor in crowding. For the extraction of these teeth to avoid crowding, studies with consistent methodologies should be performed. And when planning the indication or not of third molar extraction, one must take into account 12 available space in the arch, possible crowding factors, surgical risks and benefits. Some works highlighted that the prophylactic extraction of third molars as favorable conditions to prevent late crowding, however this practice is neither recommended nor justified. Final considerations: the impacted or impacted third molar is just one of the factors that lead to dental crowding. The professional must use alternatives that leave extraction as the last alternative for the treatment of such conditions.
