Currently dietary supplements are widely used, with the purpose of promoting health and aesthetic benefits. However, individuals consume in an exacerbated manner and without the follow-up of a qualified professional. The paper describes the impact of self-supplementation, adulteration of supplement composition and analyzes possible interactions due to the simultaneous use of supplements – medications. This is an integrative review research of qualitative approach, carried out by secondary sources in database and current legislation. Where the prevalence of self-supplementation, adulterated supplements with pharmaceutical substances and dangerous interactions was verified because of co-administration. It was concluded that the widespread use of dietary supplements is common among practitioners or not of physical activities, and a portion of these users may experience adverse reactions due to the combination of medication and supplementation. A surprising number of SA have been recalled by the FDA due to the existence of drugs in its formulation. Note that disseminated nutritional education is fundamental and demystification about natural origin products as well.
