As a country colonized by the Portuguese, Brazil suffered a strong impact with the immigration of the Portuguese. This immigration is represented in the work “O cortiço” by Alusío de Azevedo with personification and different directions for each character. This configured us as a comprehensive assumption about the objectivity of analyzing the adequacy of these immigrants from the perspective in the work “O cortiço”. The work places its temporality in the moment after slavery and the narratives take place in a tenement, a perifirerica area of Rio de Janeiro. The multiple social interactions occur from a capitalist perspective. Characters like João Romão, Jerônimo and Miranda, even though they initially share the same desire to consolidate themselves in Brazil, throughout the narrative they present different outcomes in their lives in face of their actions and choices. Therefore, this reveals the complexity of the work and the genius of the natulalist Aluísio de Azevedo in conducting these disaffections with subtlety and details of each character, which allows us to understand the life of Portuguese immigrants in a country that recently adhered to abolition.
