In 1987, the Ministry of Health considered alcohol, one of the most consumed psychoactive substances in the world for several centuries, as one of the drugs that most causes dependence due to abusive consumption, highlighting the diagnosis of alcoholism. With high water solubility and rapid absorption, alcohol can reach plasma levels in a short time, and provide from acute intoxication to alcohol dependence. In this context, pharmacotherapy interferes with the aim of contributing to the prevention and treatment of alcoholism, alleviating the possible symptoms of alcohol withdrawal syndrome and enabling access to medications in a safe and effective way. Therefore, this research is a literary review that aimed to study alcoholism and its pharmacotherapy, presenting the main drugs used and highlighting the importance of the pharmaceutical professional in the multidisciplinary team for the treatment of alcoholism.
