FROM THE PAST TO THE PRESENT: THE INFLUENCE OF TRADITIONAL GAMES ON CHILDREN'S CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT

Abstract

Traditional games constitute important cultural expressions that span generations and contribute to the construction of children's identities, socialization, and values. This article aims to analyze the influence of traditional games on children's cultural formation, highlighting their importance in the contemporary context amidst social transformations and the increasing use of digital technologies. Games such as hopscotch, hide-and-seek, tag, circle songs, jump rope, and make-believe play enable children to engage in collective experiences and develop creativity, imagination, autonomy, and various social skills, while also fostering the transmission of customs, values, and cultural knowledge. The research is characterized as a bibliographic study with a qualitative approach and descriptive nature, grounded in studies and scientific literature regarding childhood, play, culture, and child development. The analysis reveals that traditional games should not be viewed merely as forms of entertainment, but as cultural practices that contribute to preserving collective memory and shaping the identities of new generations. It is concluded that valuing traditional games within family and school environments is a key strategy for connecting children to their cultural roots, strengthening social bonds, and promoting meaningful learning experiences. In this regard, it is necessary to establish a dialogue between traditional practices and new forms of play—including digital technologies—without overlooking the cultural and educational value of playful experiences passed down through generations.
