Abstract

This study aimed to analyze symptoms of anxiety and depression in mothers of neurotypical and neurodivergent children, as well as to investigate possible associations between sociodemographic variables and the subjective experience of motherhood. Participants included 74 mothers, aged 21 to 53, who completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the PHQ-9, the GAD-7, and scales assessing the maternal experience. Results indicated that mothers of neurodivergent children exhibited significantly higher levels of anxiety and depression compared to mothers of neurotypical children. A positive relationship was observed between anxiety and depression, along with negative associations between these symptoms and satisfaction with the neurodivergent parenting experience, indicating that increased psychological distress compromises the maternal experience. Furthermore, a positive correlation was found between maternal age and more favorable feelings regarding motherhood. Depression symptoms were most influenced by the child's developmental profile, as well as the interaction between education level and income. The study concludes that social, emotional, and structural factors play a significant role in the mental health of mothers in the context of neurodivergence, underscoring the need for public policies and interventions aimed at providing psychological support and strengthening maternal support networks.
