APPLICATION OF WANDA HORTA'S THEORY OF BASIC HUMAN NEEDS IN THE SURGICAL CENTER: PERSPECTIVES FOR SAFE SURGERY

Abstract

The surgical center is a highly complex hospital environment that requires organization, strict infection control, and qualified performance from the multidisciplinary team, with a primary focus on patient safety. In this context, nursing plays a fundamental role throughout the perioperative period through the Systematization of Nursing Care (SNC), which guides the planning and execution of care. Wanda Horta’s Theory of Basic Human Needs is an important theoretical framework, enabling the identification of patients’ psychobiological, psychosocial, and psycho-spiritual needs. In addition, the use of safety protocols, such as the surgical checklist, significantly contributes to the reduction of complications and mortality. Therefore, the integration between theory, practice, and care protocols strengthens the quality of nursing assistance, promoting safer, more humanized, and effective care in the surgical environment.
