IMPACTS OF PSYCHOTROPIC MEDICATION USE IN BRAZILIAN DENTAL PATIENTS (2015-2025): PERSPECTIVES AND CHALLENGES FOR THE DENTAL SURGEON

Abstract

 The use of psychotropic medications has increased significantly in Brazil, directly impacting dental practice due to the adverse effects these substances may cause in the oral cavity. In this context, the present study aimed to analyze the impacts of psychotropic medication use among Brazilian dental patients between 2015 and 2025, highlighting the main challenges faced by dentists during clinical care. This study consists of a qualitative bibliographic and documentary review conducted through a survey of scientific publications indexed in PubMed, LILACS, SciELO, and MEDLINE databases. The findings showed that xerostomia is the most frequent adverse effect, increasing the risk of dental caries, periodontal disease, oral candidiasis, and functional discomfort. Motor alterations such as bruxism and tardive dyskinesia were also identified, as well as potential drug interactions relevant to dental treatment planning. It is concluded that knowledge of the systemic and oral effects of psychotropic medications is essential for providing safe and effective dental care, requiring the adoption of specific protocols and a multidisciplinary approach aimed at promoting oral health and improving patients’ quality of life.
