THE USE OF METFORMIN ASSOCIATED WITH SGLT2 INHIBITORS IN THE TREATMENT OF DIABETES MELLITUS: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

 This article aimed to analyze the use of metformin associated with SGLT2 inhibitors in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, highlighting its positive effects on glycemic, cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic control. This is a literature review based on 15 scientific studies published within the last 5 years. The results demonstrated that the therapeutic association of these two medications promotes significant improvement in glycemic parameters, reduction of glycated hemoglobin, and cardiometabolic benefits superior to other adjuvant therapies. Additionally, reductions in cardiovascular events, improvement in renal function, and lower progression of kidney disease in diabetic patients were evidenced. Studies also pointed to additional metabolic benefits, including improvement of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Furthermore, the combined therapy presented a favorable and satisfactory safety and tolerability profile, including in more intensive therapies and specific populations. Therefore, it is concluded that the association between metformin and SGLT2 inhibitors represents an effective, promising, safe, and efficient therapeutic strategy in the current management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
