EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE OF HOSPITAL ADMISSIONS FOR CATARACT IN THE STATE OF PARANÁ FROM 2015 TO 2025

Abstract

 This study sought to analyze the epidemiological profile of hospital admissions for cataracts in the state of Paraná from 2015 to 2025, considering its relevance as the leading cause of reversible blindness worldwide and a significant public health issue, especially in the context of an aging population. Based on data from the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS), the study evaluates the demographic, regional, and temporal characteristics of these admissions, including variables such as age group, sex, region of residence, and distribution over the years. A higher concentration of cases was observed in individuals aged 60 or older, with a predominance of females, as well as a higher number of admissions in regions with better healthcare infrastructure. A growth trend in admissions was also identified throughout the period, with a specific reduction during the COVID-19 pandemic, likely related to the suspension of elective procedures. Thus, this study contributes to the understanding of the profile of cataract admissions, highlighting regional inequalities and reinforcing the need to expand access to ophthalmological services.
