THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF CAREGIVERS OF PATIENTS WITH ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE IN PORTO NACIONAL-TO: AN ANALYSIS OF EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL BURDEN IN THE HOME ENVIRONMENT

Abstract

This article aimed to analyze the impact of emotional and physical overload on the quality of life of caregivers of Alzheimer's patients in a home environment in the municipality of Porto Nacional-Tocantins. An observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted in the basic health units of the municipality of Porto Nacional-TO. The population consisted of caregivers of elderly people with Alzheimer's disease. The sample consisted of a total of 10 caregivers, and the sample was non-probabilistic. Most caregivers (8) reported no difficulties, however, when considering activities that demand greater physical effort, such as rigorous activities, 4 caregivers stated that they had some difficulty, and 3 reported great difficulty. Five caregivers reported having reduced the time dedicated to their activities and reduced the number of tasks they would have liked to perform. Regarding body pain, it was found that only one caregiver did not experience pain in the last four weeks, but most caregivers reported pain of varying intensities, with a prevaleEste artículo tuvo como objetivo analizar el impacto de la sobrecarga emocional y física en la calidad de vida de los cuidadores de pacientes con Alzheimer en un entorno domiciliario en el municipio de Porto Nacional-Tocantins. Se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal en las unidades básicas de salud del municipio de Porto Nacional-TO. La población estuvo compuesta por cuidadores de personas mayores con enfermedad de Alzheimer. La muestra consistió en un total de 10 cuidadores, y la muestra fue no probabilística. La mayoría de los cuidadores (8) no reportaron dificultades; sin embargo, al considerar actividades que exigen un mayor esfuerzo físico, como actividades rigurosas, 4 cuidadores afirmaron tener alguna dificultad y 3 reportaron gran dificultad. Cinco cuidadores reportaron haber reducido el tiempo dedicado a sus actividades y la cantidad de tareas que hubieran deseado realizar. Con respecto al dolor corporal, se encontró que solo un cuidador no experimentó dolor en las últimas cuatro semanas, pero la mayoría de los cuidadores reportaron dolor de intensidad variable, con una prevalencia de dolor moderado (9), con un número significativo de dolor extremo e intenso.
