Abstract

Tooth bleaching is one of the most commonly performed aesthetic procedures in dentistry; however, post-bleaching dentin hypersensitivity remains the main adverse effect associated with this treatment. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) in controlling dentin hypersensitivity and its influence on bleaching outcomes. This was a randomized, double-blind, split-mouth clinical trial involving 30 participants subjected to two desensitizing protocols: 5% potassium nitrate associated with 2% sodium fluoride and CPP-ACP mousse. Sensitivity was assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) during and after the bleaching procedure, and color was measured using the Vitapan Classical shade guide. Data were analyzed using non-parametric tests (p < 0.05). The results showed a significant increase in sensitivity during the bleaching procedure, followed by a progressive reduction in subsequent evaluations, with no statistically significant differences between groups. Both protocols promoted a significant reduction in color saturation without affecting bleaching efficacy. CPP-ACP demonstrated similar performance to the conventional desensitizing agent in controlling sensitivity, without compromising aesthetic outcomes, and may be considered a viable alternative in clinical practice.
