Ballast water, used by vessels to ensure stability and safety during navigation, represents one of the main logistical and environmental challenges in coastal regions. In Arraial do Cabo (RJ), an area of high ecological and tourist importance, the improper discharge of this resource intensifies the introduction of exotic species, generating direct impacts on the local marine fauna. The present study aims to analyze the effects of ballast water on the region’s biodiversity, considering its relationship with port logistics activities. The methodology was based on a literature review and documentary analysis of environmental studies addressing the influence of this practice on the ecological dynamics of the municipality’s coastline. The results indicate that organisms transported by ships compete with native species, alter trophic chains, and threaten the maintenance of ecosystem services. It is concluded that efficient ballast water management, combined with public policies and sustainable port logistics practices, is essential to reduce environmental risks and ensure the preservation of the fauna and biodiversity of Arraial do Cabo.
