CRIMES AGAINST MILITARY POLICE OFFICERS IN THE STATE OF AMAZONAS: VICTIMIZATION, CAUSES, AND RESPONSE STRATEGIES

Abstract

This article aims, in a concise manner, to explain the crimes of violence committed against police officers, especially military police officers in the state of Amazonas, analyzing the main causes, consequences, and possible measures for prevention and reduction of police victimization. It is based on research of previously published articles, grounded in an integrative literature review, with both qualitative and quantitative approaches, of national academic publications from 2014 to 2024, as well as official data from the Ministry of Justice. Violence against military police officers constitutes a complex and multifaceted phenomenon, directly related to the social, economic, and institutional transformations that shape public security in Brazil. In the city of Manaus, there has been a significant increase in police victimization in recent decades compared to other municipalities in the state of Amazonas, and this growth is associated with the territorial expansion of organized crime, due to the large number of military police officers who, during their time off, work providing cash escort and private security, and to the precariousness of public security policies. This article aims to analyze crimes committed against military police officers in Amazonas, emphasizing their structural causes, individual and institutional consequences, as well as discussing measures for preventing and addressing police victimization. The results indicate that police victimization compromises not only the physical and psychological integrity of the officers but also the legitimacy of the state and public trust in security institutions, since criminal organizations use police victimization as a demonstration of power and force against the state.
