This article presents an experience report of a university extension project aimed at raising awareness among the population of Bragança, in northeastern Pará, regarding the impacts of animal abandonment on public health. The methodology was based on participatory and dialogic interaction with the community. As a methodological resource, informative pamphlets and posters were developed and distributed, addressing the problems caused by animal abandonment and its consequences for animal welfare and public health, such as zoonoses. Furthermore, extension students, in partnership with the Municipal Environment Department, participated in "Operation Viviane" Project, which focuses on rescuing abandoned large animals from city streets. The results highlight the population's concern regarding the occurrence of accidents and the spread of zoonoses, while also emphasizing the importance of an assertive stance from the municipal government. Consequently, it was observed that extension activities have a positive impact on the community and on the practical training of the students involved.
