Methanol, although widely used in industry, is a highly toxic substance to humans, with particularly severe effects on the central nervous system. Its intoxication, common due to the consumption of adulterated alcoholic beverages, can cause serious and permanent neurological damage with significant consequences for mental health. This article primarily aims to analyze these impacts on mental health, highlighting the neuropsychiatric effects and their implications for public health. The methodology consists of a qualitative study, conducted through a bibliographic review that analyzed scientific articles, books, and national and international official documents in the fields of toxicology, mental health, and public health. The results demonstrate that methanol intoxication is linked to cognitive alterations, mood disorders, anxiety, psychotic symptoms, and significant functional impairments, which compromise autonomy and quality of life. Furthermore, these sequelae generate a continuous and prolonged demand for specialized services, overloading the public mental health network. It is concluded that the neuropsychiatric effects of methanol represent a relevant challenge for public health, making preventive policies, educational actions, rigor in health surveillance, and the strengthening of the Psychosocial Care Network imperative.
