Patient safety in the adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a critical challenge, given the high risk of adverse events in patients with serious clinical conditions. This study aimed to analyze the role of nursing in promoting patient safety in this environment through an integrative literature review. Articles published between 2018 and 2023 were selected, in addition to national and international official guidelines. The results showed that practices such as protocol implementation, adherence to good hygiene practices, thorough medication verification, and strengthening team communication are fundamental to reducing adverse events such as pressure injuries, healthcare-associated infections, medication errors, and accidental extubations. It is concluded that nursing plays a central role in patient safety, and it is necessary to invest in training, adequate staffing levels, and the development of a safety culture.
