Abstract

Introduction: Dealing with the role of the nurse in the puerperium and the care directed to newborns is essential for understanding the assistance and guidance that must be provided by the nursing team, leading the puerperal woman and the baby to have the first contact properly throughout of the first 24 hours, and also guidelines on breast footprint and techniques for removing the baby from the breast. Objective: To present the importance of the care provided by the nursing professional to the postpartum women and to expose the needs of the necessary care that the mother must have with the newborn. Material and Methods: This is an integrative literature review, the databases used are: NCBI/PubMed (National Center for BiotechnologyInformation), SciELO (Scientific Electronic Lirary Online), Academic Google and Lilacs - Bireme (Latin American Literature and the Caribbean in Health Sciences). To delimit the contents, inclusion criteria were used: articles available in full, in Portuguese and English, published from 2014 to 2021 with free access with thematic relevance. Results and discussion: There was a selection of 9 articles to be analyzed in the theoretical discussion of this work, taking into account the role of nursing in the context of the first 24 hours of contact between mother and baby, and also the importance of awareness in the prenatal period about first care, exclusive breastfeeding, diet directed to the mother. Final considerations: It was observed that the nurse is fundamental for the maintenance of the baby's health, carrying out a path of connection and awareness and actively assisting in the first days of hospitalization right after delivery.
