Schistosomiasis is an infectious and parasitic disease of great importance for public health in Brazil. Due to its proliferation and spread, it has become a notifiable disease. Its contamination occurs when the individual comes into contact with water contaminated by cercariae, from infected snails. Through studies, it has been verified that it is essential to use preventive measures, including basic sanitation, which is responsible for protecting and improving the living conditions of the urban and rural population, including the right to drinking water, proper waste collection, health education and information for the entire population exposed to risk. The control of the parasite encompasses some aspects, and as an example we can cite morbidity, which aims to reduce the appearance of new cases. Premature diagnosis in association with treatment help control the transmission of the parasite, so that affected individuals do not suffer from the most severe forms of the disease. Thus, this study aims to review the aspects of schistosomiasis mansoni, through literature, aiming at an analysis of the diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
