Abstract

This article aimed to analyze the epidemiological profile of hospital admissions due to pneumonia in children and adolescents in the state of Paraná between 2018 and 2024. This is a descriptive epidemiological study with a quantitative approach, based on data from the Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS) provided by DataSUS. The variables analyzed included year of admission, sex, age group, and race. Results showed that 7.81% of all pediatric hospitalizations were due to pneumonia, with higher incidence rates in 2018, 2019, and after 2022. A significant decrease was noted in 2020 and 2021, coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by an increase after the relaxation of public health measures. Most cases occurred in males, in the 1 to 4-year age group, and among white individuals. The study concludes that pneumonia hospitalizations are influenced by biological and social factors, highlighting the importance of public health policies focused on prevention through vaccination, early diagnosis, and improved child healthcare.
