A factor that has been investigated as an element of great influence in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases is oxidative stress. It can be defined as an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the body's antioxidant defense capacity. The aim of this article was to review the role of oxidative stress as a highly influential target in Alzheimer's Disease. Alzheimer's Disease is the most common cause of dementia syndrome, caused by neuronal cortex loss and synaptic degeneration. In addition, it affects the individual's quality of life, economic and social development and significantly impacts the family structure. Oxidative damage occurs due to agents that promote free radicals, such as radiation, pollution and stress. They can lead to tissue damage, accelerated aging and mutations in mitochondrial DNA.
