Abstract

The use of medicines is essential for health; however, excessive consumption and accumulation in households often lead to expired products, compromising their safety and efficacy and requiring proper disposal. In Brazil, the inadequate disposal of expired medicines represents a growing problem for public health and the environment, causing significant impacts on ecosystems. This study aimed to analyze the environmental impacts of incorrect drug disposal and highlight the importance of awareness and public policies on the subject. The methodology was based on a literature review of scientific articles, legislation, and technical reports addressing disposal practices and their effects. Results indicated that most of the population still disposes of medicines in household waste or sewage systems, which increases environmental pollution and health risks. It is concluded that expanding collection programs, promoting educational campaigns, and preventing excessive consumption are essential to ensure environmental sustainability and sanitary safety.
