Abstract

The thyroid gland is located in the neck and is responsible for the production of three important hormones, triiodothyronine (T3), tetraiodothyronine or thyroxine (T4) and calcitonin, which have very relevant effects on metabolism. In general, the main hormones produced by the thyroid (T3 and T4) are metabolic stimulators. The production and secretion of hormones T3 and T4 are regulated by a negative feedback mechanism. When an anomaly in this regulation occurs, disorders such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Graves' disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, goiter, among other clinical situations are created.
