Environmental crimes represent a growing concern in Brazil due to their negative impacts on the environment, biodiversity, and public health. Federal Decree No. 6,514/2008, which regulates the administrative sanctions provided for in Law No. 9,605/1998 (Environmental Crimes Law), constitutes an important instrument of accountability and control. This study analyzed the role of environmental inspection in combating environmental crimes in the municipality of Gurupi, Tocantins, assessing the effectiveness of the application of the penalties established by current legislation. The research was conducted through a qualitative approach, based on the analysis of documents, current legislation, and previously published studies on the subject. The results showed that inspection agencies face structural and operational challenges that hinder the effectiveness of administrative sanctions. It was also found that there is a need for greater investment in human and technological resources, as well as for the strengthening of environmental education and awareness actions. It is concluded that the improvement of inspection mechanisms and institutional support are essential for strengthening public environmental management and for the effective protection of natural resources at the municipal level.
