Abstract

This article aimed to present the main therapeutic approaches to minimize the damage caused by melasma during pregnancy and post-gestation. The research was conducted through an integrative literature review that sought to answer questions about the proposed theme, based on pre-existing data. All available textual materials, such as books, scientific articles, historical records, official documents, and magazine and newspaper articles, were reviewed. The results indicate that several therapeutic approaches are recommended for the treatment of melasma, including sun protection, topical depigmenting agents that act to inhibit tyrosinase activity, remove melanin, and destroy melanin granules. These often include treatments with hydroquinone or other substances, such as azelaic acid, tretinoin, alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids, and topical corticosteroids used as monotherapy or in combination. It was concluded that melasma, while not posing a significant physiological threat to maternal health, requires special attention regarding potential psychological problems.
