Obesity is globally recognized as an epidemic transcending the metabolic sphere, establishing itself as a significant risk factor for impaired mental health. The complex bidirectional relationship between excess body weight and psychiatric disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and eating disorders, demands an integrated and in-depth approach. This systematic review aims to analyze and synthesize the latest evidence on the biological, psychosocial, and neuroendocrine mechanisms linking obesity to mental dysfunction. A systematic search was conducted in the Scielo, PubMed, and Latindex databases, resulting in the selection of 24 articles published in the last five years. The findings indicate that chronic low-grade inflammation, social stigma, and changes in the gut microbiota act as crucial mediators of this comorbidity. The discussion emphasizes the need for therapeutic interventions that simultaneously address body weight and psychological conditions, aiming for improved quality of life and long-term success in managing both conditions.
