This article sought the interrelationship between periodontal disease and Diabetes Mellitus in elderly individuals constitutes a condition of clinical relevance, as it can lead to complications that directly impact the systemic health of these patients. In this context, the present study aimed to analyze the correlation between periodontal disease and Diabetes Mellitus, addressing the associated risks, therapeutic approaches, and necessary care for the proper management of these conditions. Both pathologies present a high prevalence in the elderly population, representing factors that significantly compromise quality of life. The literature has shown that periodontal disease, when not properly controlled, can hinder glycemic management, while Diabetes Mellitus— especially when poorly controlled—favors the progression of periodontal disease, establishing a bidirectional relationship. The methodology adopted consisted of an integrative literature review, carried out through a bibliographic search in the following databases: CAPES Journals, Google Scholar, Virtual Health Library (VHL), PerioImplante News, and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). Studies published between 2020 and 2025, available in full in Portuguese, English, or Spanish, that met the defined selection criteria—including the use of descriptors pertinent to the topic—were considered.
