Introduction: The present study deals with the process of human dignity in the face of the current prison scenario in Brazilian penitentiaries, also evaluating the nuances of the resocialization system in the context of reducing overcrowding in the country's prison system. Objective: To understand how the principle of human dignity is understood in the current Brazilian prison system and what resocialization strategies can be implemented to change the current scenario of overcrowding. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review, where searches were conducted in the Scielo database and Portal de Periodicos do CAPES. Results: It is essential to understand the reality of Brazilian penitentiaries, given the imminent overcrowding of these institutions throughout the country. The principle of human dignity must, therefore, be considered in this analysis since it is constitutional and the offender has the right to have the guarantees provided by the constitution. Therefore, it is important to consider the concept of crime, the social function of the penalty and the possibilities of confrontation and strategies that corroborate with the need to unburden Brazil's prison system. Conclusion: The work points out that the crisis in the Brazilian prison system is evident, and that its discussion can be facilitated through strategies of investment in the re-socialization of the convict. The discussion of the theme is of great importance since it deals with a legal-social reality trivialized by society.
