This article presents national and global public safety indices in Brazil and reviews topics and possible causes of the instability of security in the country. Its objective is to understand the motivations that resulted in the security calamity, the lack of trust in the police, the actions taken and the factors that contributed to the disarticulation of their activities during the pandemic. The research was structured around official indices, released by the federal government, and unofficial indices that society itself initiated due to the lack of trust in the government, both due to democratic instability and the violent history of police approaches. The methodology used involves bibliographic, documentary and oral history research, through officially reported interviews, internationally, from some companies specializing in public security. The study also retrieves information contained in violence atlases, promotes possible solutions for reducing violence, which, in some way, improves the quality of life, both for society in general and for security management.
