Export Processing Zones were created to mitigate some problems in Brazil that have persisted for years, such as the unequal distribution of income and the establishment of new factories in the country, which suffered a serious process of deindustrialization in 1990 due to the opening of the country's economy, which allowed the insertion of foreign companies. This reindustrialization can be facilitated by delimiting areas where manufacturing and service companies set up their production for the international market. This is very beneficial to the country and to the municipality that receives the EPZs because it increases the collection of municipal, state and federal taxes, improves local infrastructure by modernizing ports, airports, advances in education, etc. These developments can be seen in the city of São Gonçalo do Amarante, which is home to the Pecém Export Processing Zone, which saw the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the municipality and the city's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and per capita GDP increase considerably.
