THE CONTRIBUTION OF FORENSIC DENTISTRY TO THE AGE ASSESSMENT OF INDIVIDUALS

Abstract

Introduction: This article sought to assess age through forensic dentistry involving the observation of morphological changes in teeth and surrounding structures, which develop according to predictable chronological patterns. These parameters are essential for identifying individuals in various legal and forensic contexts, especially when identity documents are absent or contested. Objective: This study aims to analyze the contribution of forensic dentistry to the assessment of an individual’s age, highlighting its relevance in contemporary forensic and legal practices. Methodology: A bibliographic review was conducted using scientific databases such as PubMed, SciELO, and LILACS, covering the period from 2020 to 2025. Searches included descriptors like “Forensic Dentistry,” “Age Determination,” and “Age Assessment,” with Boolean operators to refine results. Results: Selected studies demonstrate that forensic dentistry provides effective methods for estimating age based on dental data such as eruption, root formation, and wear. Integration with digital technologies, such as computed tomography and forensic analysis software, has increased accuracy. Additionally, interdisciplinary collaboration with anthropology and legal medicine has strengthened the reliability of these estimates. Discussion: The application of dental techniques for age assessment has become a reliable resource in constructing biological profiles. In cases involving immigration, mass disasters, and legal disputes, this approach supports identification efforts and ensures compliance with legal and human rights guidelines. Conclusion: Forensic dentistry has established itself as an indispensable forensic tool, particularly in age estimation. Continued development of technical protocols and advancements in imaging technologies reinforce its importance in forensic investigations, providing greater scientific rigor and legal support.
