Abstract

Sports Nursing, officially recognized by COFEN in 2019, is a specialty that aims to promote, prevent, and restore the health of athletes. This area significantly expands the field of nursing practice, covering everything from emergency care to physical rehabilitation and psychosocial support. However, despite advances and growing importance, the specialty still faces obstacles such as poor visibility, lack of specific protocols, and limited resources. These factors compromise the quality and continuity of care provided to athletes in different sports contexts. The general objective of this research is to analyze the role of nursing in the care and rehabilitation of athletes with sports injuries. This study adopted an integrative literature review with a qualitative approach, carried out between August 2024 and June 2025, using the PICo method. Sports injuries, such as sprains, muscle strains, fractures, and dislocations, therefore require specialized nursing care for pain management, immobilization, and emotional support. In addition, nurses apply protocols such as P.R.I.C.E. and monitors rehabilitation, providing guidance on rest and muscle strengthening. In addition to physical care, it also offers psychological support to ensure a full recovery. Furthermore, prevention involves education on safe practices, correct use of equipment and continuous monitoring of the athlete. It is concluded that sports nursing plays an essential role in caring for both the body and emotions of athletes, promoting effective prevention and recovery. Despite the challenges, such as the lack of specific protocols and training, investment in education and research strengthens the area, ensuring comprehensive and multidisciplinary care.
