THE ROLE OF NURSES IN CONTROLLING HOSPITAL INFECTIONS -IRAS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Abstract

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are one of the biggest challenges in hospitals, aggravated by poor hand hygiene, inappropriate use of antibiotics, and frequent invasive procedures. The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified this scenario, requiring rapid adaptation of nursing professionals and reinforcing the importance of biosafety, continuous training, and rigorous control of hospital infections to ensure the safety of patients and staff. This study analyzed the control of HAIs during the pandemic, investigating strategies adopted, challenges faced by nurses, and the contribution of training to biosafety. A systematic review was conducted with 16 articles selected between 2019 and 2024, applying strict inclusion and exclusion criteria. Nurses played an essential role in the control of HAIs, adopting practices such as rigorous hand hygiene, correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), continuous training, and specific protocols. Despite the challenges, such as overload, stress and scarcity of resources, the leading role of nursing in prevention stood out, reinforcing the need for structural and educational investments and effective public policies to strengthen the health system. It is concluded that the role of nursing in controlling HAIs is essential to ensure safer hospital environments and effective responses to future health crises.
