Ovarian cancer is one of the most lethal gynecological cancers. Its high mortality rate is related to its late diagnosis. Opportunistic bilateral salpingectomy at the time of benign gynecological surgery has been an opportunity to prevent ovarian cancer and, above all, is used in family planning as a substitute for tubal ligation at the time of delivery. The general aim of this study is to map scientific production on opportunistic salpingectomy and, from this, to identify the majority understanding of its effectiveness as a preventative measure for ovarian cancer in women undergoing tubal sterilization as a form of family planning. This is an integrative literature review using the PubMed database. The following keywords were used in the search strategy: “salpingectomy” AND ovarian cancer AND “risk reduction behavior”. Opportunistic bilateral salpingectomy in a benign gynecological surgical procedure is suitable as a form of surgical prevention for ovarian cancer, reducing the statistics of up to 65% of cancer cases. The conclusion is that there is still a need for prospective population studies with greater statistical power to gain a more detailed understanding of opportunistic salpingectomy as a surgical measure to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer.
