This article aims to discuss the importance of the presence of dentists in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), highlighting their role in promoting oral health and preventing systemic complications in critically ill patients. For this purpose, a literature review was carried out in the PUBMED and SCIELO databases using the following descriptors “Hospital Dental Team”, “Dentist Surgeon”, “Intensive Care Unit”. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 14 articles between the years 2015 and 2025 were selected for discussion. After a careful review of the literature, it was found that the work of dentists in ICUs contributes significantly to the reduction of hospital infections, such as ventilator-associated pneumonia, improves patient prognosis, promotes humanization of care and reduces hospital costs. In addition, the need for adequate training and the appreciation of these professionals within multidisciplinary health teams is highlighted. Therefore, the inclusion of dentists in the context of ICUs is essential for a comprehensive and effective approach to the care of critically ill patients. The urgency of public and academic policies that strengthen this role is highlighted.
