Abstract

Obstetric violence can occur at different stages of the pregnancy-puerperal cycle and is characterized by abusive, disrespectful and inhumane behavior during the care provided to women during prenatal, childbirth, postpartum and abortion care, often disregarding their rights and autonomy. Thus, the guiding question is: what are the impacts of obstetric violence on women's health and how can health professionals contribute to reducing this violence? To answer this question, this study aims to analyze the different types of obstetric violence and their impacts on women's health, with an emphasis on the physical, emotional and social effects resulting from such practices. This is an integrative review study based on the analysis of scientific productions published between 2019 and 2023. The results identified the main types of obstetric violence and their consequences, such as physical injuries, infections, and significant psychological effects, such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorders. The study also opens a discussion on the importance of humanizing childbirth as a fundamental strategy for preventing and addressing obstetric violence, promoting more welcoming, respectful, and woman-centered care, with the potential to improve their physical and emotional well-being.
