Giardiasis affects a wide range of living beings, including dogs and cats. Due to the close proximity of humans to these animals, humans can also become infected. Several species of the protozoan Giardia spp. parasitize mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. However, only G. duodenalis is of epidemiological importance for humans, dogs, and cats. Infection by G. duodenalis is highly prevalent worldwide, especially in developing countries. This microorganism is one of the most isolated causes of diarrhea in humans and is a cause of great concern due to its zoonotic potential. Due to its zoonotic importance, it is important to alert owners about the proper handling of animal feces, personal hygiene, and environmental cleanliness. To this end, a study was conducted on preventive measures for reinfection with Giardia, and based on the responses of owners, an interdisciplinary project was carried out to raise awareness among the population about this zoonosis.
