This article aims to demonstrate the importance of cardiac screening and evaluation in preventing sudden death in sports, since studies have shown a reduction in mortality associated with sudden events in athletes who underwent such practices during periods of physical activity. Accordingly, a total of 26 articles from the PubMed and Virtual Health Library (BVS) databases were analyzed. In this sense, observational studies were used to assess the accuracy of cardiac screening and evaluation in preventing sudden death in sports, especially in patients with pre-existing pathological cardiac conditions. Based on the results, greater effectiveness was observed in preventing sudden events among athletes who underwent regular cardiac evaluations and pre-participation screening, compared to those who did not. The incidence of sudden death was considerably reduced, proving the effectiveness of cardiac assessments and contributing to a safer sports practice. In conclusion, it is important to make clear the contribution of pre-participation screening in sports and to increase the adoption of such practices by healthcare professionals, in order to ensure greater safety for athletes.
