Resocialization is the process by which the prison system seeks to reeducate and prepare individuals to live in society again, respecting social norms and values. Social reintegration is the process of reintegrating former inmates into society, ensuring them opportunities to resume their lives with dignity, autonomy, and respect. Given this scenario, this study aimed to discuss the influence that the Brazilian prison system has on the process of resocialization and social reintegration. It was based on a literature review, based on scientific articles, books, periodicals, and current legislation on the respective subject. Data collection was carried out through databases such as Scielo, Google Scholar, among others, from 2020 to 2025. The results showed that overcrowding, unhealthiness, violence, and lack of basic resources in many prisons hinder the development of resocialization programs. These conditions often reinforce marginalization and feelings of exclusion. Furthermore, the system is largely punitive, emphasizing incarceration rather than offering real opportunities for rehabilitation. Living with prisoners of different levels of dangerousness can intensify contact with criminal networks. However, initiatives such as education and work have proven to be the best path for a planned transition to life in freedom in a safe manner and without the risk of reoffending.
