This research aimed to analyze the genogram, a symbology instrument capable of tracing, delineating, understanding and analyzing family relationships and their nuances, as a tool for therapeutic intervention in the practice of psychology. A narrative literature review was used as a methodology, justifying the interest of the proposal due to the scarcity of theoretical references on the subject, whether in studies and/or psychotherapy itself. Throughout the research, several authors were listed who were able to describe and expand the concepts, adding knowledge about the symbolic evolution of the genogram, highlighting the importance of the subject, as did McGoldrick and Randy Gerson and their considerations that enriched and contributed so that the aforementioned tool could be an influential therapeutic resource in the practice of general clinical psychology but standing out in systemic family psychology, assisting students and professionals in psychology and related areas.
