The current social context, shaped by the economic and environmental crises, has led to significant changes in the lives of citizens, organizations, and society. This paper offers a reflection on professional practice and the challenges faced by Social Work in Portugal, resulting from various social and economic transformations, as well as the ongoing need for adjustments in professional practice. This study adopts a qualitative approach, relying on a literature review and reflection on the personal experience of a social worker practicing in Portugal. The findings suggest that increasing bureaucratization and the demand for immediate responses are restricting professional autonomy and reducing the time available for direct interaction with individuals. The study concludes that, to address these challenges, it is essential to strengthen continuous professional development, supervision, and inter-service coordination. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of fostering interdisciplinarity and investing in effective social policies. The research emphasizes the need to adapt the profession to new demands without compromising its ethical principles or commitment to social justice and human rights.
