Gastrectomy is a surgery that partially or completely removes the stomach and is the only curative treatment for gastric cancer. Gastrectomy is a highly complex surgery with high morbidity and mortality rates and postoperative complications when not performed in a reference center. In the case of gastric cancer, complications may occur more frequently as these are patients who already have compromised clinical and nutritional conditions. The most relevant complications are respiratory complications and anastomotic and duodenal stump fistulas, which have a high potential for mortality. There are also complications from surgical wound infection, urinary infections and evisceration. Therefore, it is worth highlighting that gastrectomies are major surgeries that must be performed by professionals qualified for such a procedure and in hospitals with adequate conditions to carry out the same.
