THE IMPORTANCE OF PALLIATIVE CARE IN THE TREATMENT OF COMORBIDITIES OF AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISORDER WITH LATE DIAGNOSIS

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the importance of palliative care in treating comorbidities associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in individuals with late diagnosis. The methodology consisted of a literature review based on scientific databases such as Google Scholar, SciELO, and PubMed, using descriptors related to palliative care, ASD, and comorbidities. The results indicate that individuals with ASD frequently present anxiety disorders, depression, ADHD, epilepsy, sleep disorders, and gastrointestinal problems, which may be aggravated by the absence of early diagnosis. The study highlights that a multidisciplinary approach to palliative care, involving doctors, psychologists, occupational therapists, and other professionals, is essential to provide adequate support and improve the quality of life for these patients. Additionally, palliative care is also crucial in offering support to family members and caregivers, who often experience high levels of stress. The conclusion reinforces the need to integrate palliative care into ASD management, especially in late diagnoses, to minimize the impact of comorbidities and provide greater well-being for patients and their caregivers.
