Abstract

Adopting children with disabilities is a practice that requires care, sensitivity and significant commitment on the part of the adopters and the institutions involved in the process. This type of adoption involves unique challenges, but also offers profound rewards for the families that embrace this opportunity. Based on this understanding, the main objective of this study is to understand the adoption process, especially of children with disabilities, and the implications and impediments to this process. The methodology adopted was a descriptive bibliographical research, with the procedure of collecting information existing in the literature on the subject, where we sought to conduct a study on the main institutes that can be addressed by this subject, from some considerations on adoption, especially of children with disabilities, presenting the legislation that guarantees the entire process, as well as carrying out a summary on the child and family power, considering that, as the nuclear cell of society, it is responsible for regulating most of the actions that occur in the social environment. The results obtained show that unfortunately there is still a lot of prejudice regarding adoption, especially of children with disabilities due to fear of the unknown, and that Law 12.010/2009 does not resolve all the pending issues raised by society regarding adoption. Concluding that the adoption process for children with disabilities or not is guaranteed by law, but that it still needs awareness-raising work to eliminate the prejudices that still exist, as well as the extensive process that often scares potential adopters.
