Abstract

Social control plays a crucial role in strengthening public health in Brazil by promoting citizen participation and transparency in the management of the Unified Health System (SUS). This article examines the historical evolution of social control in the SUS, its impact on the formulation and monitoring of public health policies, and the challenges faced in consolidating this practice. Through a bibliographic review and documentary analysis, the discussion highlights how health councils and health conferences have contributed to the system's democratization and improved access to healthcare. The findings show that social control is essential to ensure equity and comprehensiveness in health services for the population.
