The gestational period is marked by intense transformations, whether at a metabolic, physiological or structural level, which entails a greater nutritional demand. The nutritional status of pregnant women is determined by the ingestion of micro and macro nutrients, which when inappropriately consumed, can generate potential health complications for both mother and baby. In the meantime, nutritional assistance during prenatal care should be seen as an indispensable and inseparable component, adequate nutrition is extremely important, after all, the demand for energy and nutrients from the maternal organism is much greater to provide fetal growth and development. Thus, this literature review study aims to verify the importance of nutritional assistance in high-risk prenatal care. With the elaboration of the work, it was possible to realize the importance of nutritional education for both the gestational and post-pregnancy period, since the mother has great or total responsibility - depending on the cases and family compositions - for the nutritional care of her children , therefore, care in nutrition protects the health of mother and baby during and after birth.
