This article examines the concept of smart and sustainable cities. The development of smart cities is driven by technological advances applied to urban management, discussing their role in improving the quality of urban life and in meeting the 17 (seventeen) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through the analysis of global cities such as Sydney, Oslo, Seoul and Curitiba, the most advanced practices in sustainability and urban innovation are presented, since cities need to be not only smart, but also sustainable and people-centered. Population growth in cities has forced the search for alternatives to meet social expectations with the aim of improving quality of life. This is a challenge for cities, especially in the interior. Based on this, the study carries out a critical assessment of Itapetininga-SP, identifying comparative advances and limitations in relation to world-leading cities. Articles that discuss sustainability through waste management, environmental education and cultural practices are used as a theoretical basis, suggesting recommendations for the city to achieve greater efficiency and equity in the context of the SDGs.
